Getting more out of the container you own
A container arrives as an empty steel box. What turns it into a working store is what goes inside and what gets fitted to it. Shelving converts unusable vertical space into pick faces. Racking gets stock off the floor and away from condensation. Lighting makes the back half of a forty-foot unit genuinely usable. Locks, lockboxes and hasps decide how secure it actually is.

What to consider first
Most owners get the best return from three things: raising stock off the floor, improving airflow, and upgrading the lock. Floor-level storage is where condensation and spillage cause damage. Poor airflow is where corrosion starts. And a container is only as secure as the padlock protecting it, so a closed-shackle lock inside a lockbox is a small cost against the value of the contents.

Fitting out a container
Shelving and racking
Free-standing units avoid drilling the walls and can be removed when the container is sold or moved. Fixed racking makes better use of the width but should be attached to the side posts rather than the panels.
Lighting and power
Battery or solar lighting avoids the cost of a supply. Any mains installation should be carried out and certified by a qualified electrician, particularly in a steel enclosure.
Ventilation
Most containers have a small number of factory vents. Adding vents high and low on opposite sides creates cross-flow, which is the single most effective step against condensation.
Security hardware
A lockbox shields the padlock from bolt croppers and angle grinders. A closed-shackle padlock inside a lockbox is the standard combination.
Floor protection
Plywood overlay, rubber matting or pallets keep stock off the deck and make spills easier to deal with.
Door hardware
Hinges, cams, keepers and seals are consumable items. Keeping them greased and aligned prevents the most common container fault of all.
