About open top containers
An open top container replaces the fixed steel roof with removable bows and a tarpaulin. That allows a crane or excavator to load from directly overhead, which is the only practical option for tall machinery, bulk material, or anything that cannot be manoeuvred through the door opening.
These units are purpose-built rather than converted, with the same corner castings and structural frame as a standard container. The header at the door end is normally removable as well, so the full opening height is available when needed.

Is an open top container waterproof?
The tarpaulin sheds rain when correctly fitted and tensioned, but it is not equivalent to a steel roof. For long-term storage of moisture-sensitive contents, a standard container is the better option.
Can the roof be sealed permanently?
Some buyers fit a fixed roof after purchase, though that removes the top-loading capability the unit was bought for. If you do not need overhead access, buy a standard container instead.
